The grilled cheese sandwich is simple, elegant, and timeless. The first grilled cheese sandwich was created by Stewart Cheese in the lower east side of Manhattan. Originally it contained no cheese at all and was just two pieces of bread “grilled” by ironing them on an ironing board. One day Stewart Cheese gave one of his ironed bread sandwiches to a friend. While the friend was eating the ironed bread on a park bench, a passerby asked him what he was eating. He replied, “A grilled Cheese sandwich,” meaning it was grilled by Mr. Cheese. The passerby misunderstood and added cheese to the sandwich giving birth to the delicious sandwich we celebrate today. That passerby was Teddy Roosevelt.*
